Oppose HB 1805
There are already approved medications available through the FDA, and that can be prescribed legally through a medical professional.
HB 1805 will greatly expand the number of users and gives regulatory authority over to an unelected/unaccountable body.
Also, the term “low THC” is deceptive. THC is a very dangerous drug.
- Texas should NOT be circumventing the FDA approval process and allowing such a dangerous drug to be used as medicine.
- The FDA only recommends 20 mg (10mg twice a day) of THC use daily using an approved product called MARINOL. This THC-based drug has many hazards and warnings. For example, it can cause harmful psychiatric & cognitive effects and should not be used by patients with a history of psychiatric problems.
- 30% of cannabis users are developing cannabis use disorder (addiction to THC)
- The National Institutes of Health states that young men with cannabis use disorder have an increased risk of developing schizophrenia. The study authors estimated that as many as 30% of cases of schizophrenia among men aged 21-30 might have been prevented by averting cannabis use disorder.
